The Gypsol team are very often lucky enough to be chosen to specify and supply some really exciting and unusual projects. This one is no exception. The Groundhouse, on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent was designed with recycling and the environment firmly in mind. The roof was to be overlaid with meadow grass. To ensure that the level of energy is minimized the south facing walls are glass to take advantage of as much sunshine as possible with all other walls being constructed from recycled tyres and chalk clay.
The Groundhouse is the only one of its kind in the UK and we understand it is the first one so far to have been completely subjected to the SAP System to determine the energy efficiency of the building and its elements.
To complement the efficient use of energy the designer required a heating system which was thermally efficient, responsive and incorporated as much recycled content as possible. In order to fulfil these requirements warm water underfloor heating underfloor heating was selected and this was encapsulated with Gypsol Rustique screed.
Gypsol Rustique screed is made using Gypsol binder which is the only anhydrite binder manufactured wholly in the UK and comprises around 98% waste material harvested from the chemical industry. Rustique is a unique and innovative system which comprises a fast track finished floor which does not require the application of subsequent floor coverings. The Gypsol Rustique screed harbors a carbon footprint which is some 94% lower than that of a traditional sand cement screed. It also has a thermal conductivity of 2.3W/mK, more than twice that of a traditional hand compacted sand cement screed. This coupled with its rapid response and low mass offers a heating system which is second to none. The area to be screeded was 200m2 and this was installed by local contractors, EJS Floor Solutions from Rochester in Kent. The Gypsol Rustique screed was supplied by Brett Concrete.
All Gypsol Screeds, Rustique included, have the unique ability to withstand the force drying process without detriment to the screed. As a result the system can be rapidly installed and then rapidly dried being ready to receive the Rustique Seal Coat in as little as 14 days in well controlled drying conditions. As a result Gypsol Rustique remains unrivalled as a flooring solution offering a high level of efficiency and an attractive architectural finish without the costs and risks associated with a subsequent floor covering.
